About Kim Kara, M.Ed.

Educator, Creator, Author, and Founder of CELBANPrep

Kim Kara, M.Ed., is an educator, author, creator, and founder whose work has focused on helping Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) and Internationally Educated Health Professionals (IEHPs) develop the English-language and communication abilities needed for healthcare practice in Canada.

Since 2009, Kim has developed CELBAN preparation and communication-learning resources for Internationally Educated Health Professionals.

> What began as CELBAN preparation has grown into a broader educational ecosystem encompassing CELBANPrep, CELBANPrep Publishing, CELBANPrep University, and the CELBAN Help Centre at CELBAN.info.

Why Does Kim Host the CELBAN Help Centre Events?

The Events bring together two parts of Kim's educational work:

The learning experience of live exploration.

The purpose is not simply to provide more CELBAN preparation material.

> It is to create a place where participants can understand the framework, explore communication skills, evaluate their own development, ask questions, and learn alongside others.

That is why the Events begin with the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and explore the communicative abilities beneath professional healthcare communication.

The CLB is the framework. CELBAN applies that framework in the healthcare context.

Kim's work therefore asks a question that reaches beyond simply,

“What will be on the test?”

Her work explores,

"What do I actually need to be able to do as a communicator?"

A Journey That Began With CELBAN

Kim launched CELBANPrep in 2009, initially focusing on the particular needs of Internationally Educated Nurses preparing for CELBAN: in a face-to-face situation.

Her work subsequently expanded into:

career development. ✅

In 2011 she started publishing. She began with:

Later she added:

the Grammar Essentials Series. ✅
the Medical Collocation Collection. ✅

Through CELBANPrep Publishing, Kim has authored and developed CELBAN preparation guides, grammar resources, medical collocation resources, workbooks, and other educational publications.

In alignment with her Compassion Pricing Policy, the publishing work has made resources available internationally, including through Amazon marketplaces.

As companions to CELBANPrep University, an app-based virtual campus, that educational work becomes a structured learning environment where learners can develop skills through courses, modules, resources, and guided learning pathways.

Fostering due diligence, along with discernment and professional judgement, through the CELBAN Help Centre at CELBAN.info, the work developed into a knowledge environment focused on understanding the CLB, CELBAN, communication development, preparation, and informed decision-making.

What Does Kim Believe About Learning?

Rooted in her Bachelor in Science, her Master's in Adult Education, and her certification as a Life Skills Coach, Kim's approach begins with a simple premise:

Communication is more than producing correct English.

It is sharing information appropriate to time and place.

What does that mean?

A person can know vocabulary and grammar and still struggle to understand what matters, recognize another person's purpose, interpret meaning, respond appropriately, or communicate effectively in a healthcare context.

For this reason, rather than relying solely on memorization or practice questions Kim's educational work emphasizes the embodiment of skills through practices including but not limited to:

Kim's resources have consistently been designed around helping learners recognize patterns, understand communication demands, and develop the ability to use language purposefully in professional contexts.

From Exam Preparation to Professional Communication

CELBAN remains an important part of Kim's work.

Because of her background as a Life Skills Coach, coupled with her M.Ed., using her scientifically trained mind: Kim understands the fundamental elements embedded in the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLBs) at the foundation of the Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nurses.

She knows and deeply understands that the person preparing for CELBAN is not only preparing to answer an examination question. They are preparing to communicate as a healthcare professional in moderately demanding situations (CLB Stage II, 5–8) and demanding situations (CLB Stage III, 9–12).

> Miscommunications in the medical field can be detrimental when it comes to patient health and safety.

Furthermore, the cultural context of healthcare professions in Canada is often patient-centred, which may be quite different from the philosophies, practices, and policies within which Internationally Educated Nurses and other Internationally Educated Health Professionals have previously been trained and worked.

With her student-centred focus, developed through her Life Skills Coach training:

> Kim is able to model and facilitate these skills and abilities naturally, so that people within her sphere of influence can experience them firsthand.

They do not simply witness how communication skills are applied and adapted. They experience the effects and affects of the interpersonal skills identified through the CLB framework.

That is why Kim's work has increasingly connected CELBAN preparation, CLB development, healthcare communication, patient safety, professional integration, and career development.

The Events reflect this wider view.

CELBAN preparation is part of the journey. It does not have to be the whole destination.

Kim's Role in the CELBAN Help Centre Events

For these Events, Kim is not simply presenting a course.

She is creating a space for shared exploration.

Participants may encounter a CLB skill, try a self-evaluation activity, discuss possible responses, ask questions, examine communication in context, and consider what their own responses reveal about their development.

> The goal is not to tell every participant exactly what to do.

It is to help participants become more capable of understanding what they need to do next.
